Psoriasis Remedies
Psoriasis Remedies
Psoriasis is a considered as one of the most common skin diseases that causes skin redness and irritation. It affects approximately 2% of the population, appearing more often among people of European ancestry. This chronic disease stems from hereditary defect that causes overproduction of keratin.
Psoriasis is most common in people between age 15 and 35. Today, there is still no known cure for psoriasis, only psoriasis remedies. However, here are some measures may help improve the appearance and feel of damaged skin:
Use your medicated cream or ointment
You may apply some over-the-counter cream or ointment which contains salicylic acid or hydrocortisone to help reduce scaling and itching. For scalp psoriasis remedies, you may try medicated shampoo containing coal tar. But before using any of these, always consult your doctor first.
Moisturizer Use
After bathing, promptly apply a heavy, ointment-based moisturizer while the skin is still moist. Oils may be recommended for very dry skin because they can stay longer on your skin than creams or lotions do and are more effective at preventing water evaporation from the skin. Apply moisturizer several times a day during cold, dry weather.
Cover the affected areas overnight
For more improvement, apply an ointment-based moisturizer then wrap with a plastic wrap overnight. When morning comes, remove the plastic wrap then wash the scales away by showering or bathing.
Bathe Daily
Taking a bath everyday helps to remove the scales and calm an inflamed skin. For your bath, you may add colloidal oatmeal, bath oil, Dead Sea salts or Epsom salts to the water and soak it for at least fifteen minutes as one of the psoriasis remedies. It is strongly advised to avoid hot water and harsh soaps which can aggravate the symptoms. One should use mild soaps that have added oils and fats and lukewarm water.
Limit sunlight exposure to small amounts
Too much is bad. So too much sun is also bad for your skin because it can worsen the condition and also increases the risk for skin cancer. However, controlled amount of sunlight may significantly improve skin lesions. When sunbathing, do only short sessions for 3 or more times per week. Remember to keep a record of the time you exposed yourself to the sun to avoid overexposure. Also, don’t forget to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Reapply it every two hours, or more frequently if you are perspiring or swimming. Still, it is best to talk to your physician before starting natural sunlight for treatment as psoriasis remedies.
Prevention Is One Of The Best Psoriasis Remedies
Try to avoid psoriasis triggers
Identify what are the factors that can exacerbate your psoriasis and create a plan to prevent or avoid them. Usually, stress is the main factor in worsening this condition. However, smoking, infections, skin injuries, and intense sun exposure can also worsen it. Avoiding these could be the best psoriasis remedies to date.
